Transfer outcomes in Classroom Learning

For the purposes of this assignment, I will plan to teach 8th grade students how to use audio equipment and editing software to create a podcast. To teach podcasting with the intention of student's positive transfer of their learning, I will have them pick a topic to podcast on that relates to one of their other classes. For example, if students are taking 8th grade science that is about to study a unit on the sun, I will have them create a podcast about sun spots so that they will later be able to transfer their knowledge to their science class later on. To apply near transfer, I will have students utilize their newly developed podcasting knowledge for future assignments on different topics. To facilitate far transfer, I will use other new media techniques to broadcast students podcasts, for example having students upload their stories on to the class blog (testing their developing computer literacy skills). In order to prevent negative transfer from this exercise, I would have students understand the differences in writing a script for a podcast and a paper for a class so that understand there are differences among the mediums and that different skill sets are appropriate for each.
